NED MILLIGAN Real Fun LP (Florabelle)
Wonderfully realized, reflective compositions by the always dependable Ned Milligan, who did some estimable works in field recordings years ago around porch chimes and weather that I’ve never forgotten. Real Fun swings in that same path, but world audio is here woven into simple, Americana-imbued minimal folk/drone pieces, like a Chuck Johnson record played three rooms over as raindrops hit shaped tin and drip into buckets on the way down. Conceptualized to capture both memories of his fatherhood and revisit those of his own relationships with his late father, it captures actual moments of quiet understanding and peace between generations in a way that feels like memory, how it drifts in and out on the milestones you set for yourselves, your bedrock of feelings, without the burden that life presses on all the parts in between.
