HD horde: good early evening to you. Here’s the edition of Heathen Disco I wanted to get to you over the weekend. I’m hoping to run a few extra this week as well as a Purple Vu, to make sure you paid subscribers are getting your money’s worth. Music is flowing like water these days (and somehow the least commodified, as far as artists on the scale typically being covered here is concerned). Monoculture is rushing back in some ways (like the movies this year), but all this music is just hanging out unnoticed. I think about what gets big and what gets compromised these days, and while I’d love to see some folks make more of a living wage off their art, the fact that all of this is down here, for us, is maybe the most exciting thing going. Traditions continue, new sounds grow out of nowhere, songs and rhythms get recombinated and contextualized anew. It requires some skin in the game that the people who put this stuff out into the world will never get back, but I get it — did it for years.

BENT LIGHT The Daylight Is Ours LP (Memory Waste)

Spectacular effort from a Connecticut duo of guitarists Michael Slyne and Russell Linder, who settle upon an ambient/drone ur-band via improvisation and assemblage, like Faust in the plastic meadow. There’s respect paid to treating moment after moment as one statement flowing into the next, no crescendos needed or wanted. The virtues of “Decametric” played at/around 45 RPM somehow amplify themselves as the guitars border treated instruments or something on Mille Plateaux, so you’re gonna have to get one of the hundred copies they pressed up.
