SLIPPERS Slippers 08 LP (Perennial / K)
Interesting, very hooky/busy guitar indie pop styles, a really slick job – the solo project of Madeline Babuka Black drops a hook in every second there’s music playing. Barely anything on this record breaks the two-and-a-half-minute mark, but it’s all changes and none of it drifts off, so each song seems like it’s been playing for a while. Anyone who ever complained that Tony Molina was delivering 12 minutes of music every 5 years will have something to think about here. Definitely four albums’ worth of music in 25 minutes or so. Very Beatles/Anglo/power pop, like labelmates Sharp Pins but a little more relaxed. Madeline BB has a wonderful, clear, melodic voice that in its lower register reminds of Kirsty MacColl and there are some great changes stuffed in here (esp. “Wants for Everyone” and “’Til You Know”). Hard not to find something to like here, just keeps working so hard. You notice how they land a laugh every 12-15 seconds on Cheers from season 3 onward? It’s like that.
