Hey everybody.
Purple Vu is live. It’s $3 a month/$30 a year for a subscription and more details are at the link below.
I’d encourage you to get in there, it’s gonna be a little different than Heathen D (focus on older music and culture) and I have plenty to say. First newsletter comes through tomorrow. I trust that you like what I do here to want some more of it, particularly out of the lens of today. Sounds, crate digs, other cultural signpost mapping / guidance.
Meanwhile here are some reviews of new stuff, which is the focus of Heathen Disco (music from the last six months).
Keep sending it in!

BITTER FICTIONS Amethyst & Emerald LP (Shaking Box Music)
Nicely obliterated, memory-holed guitar/synth scapes from Calgary’s Devin Friesen, chronicling the move from the prairie to the big city and back again, in an era of turmoil that would’ve seemed unfathomable upon leaving, and all too real coming back. It’s appropriate for that time and our global hangover, melancholy contrapuntal guitar lines patiently wearing a groove into the psychic floor in the comfort of repetition. Deep personal aqua/bass zone representation, kinda like that muted reverb Roy Montgomery uses, make a moody, weight-bearing construction for the megamind psych buzz rippin’ over the second half of “Aquamarine” or the glacial Northern Lights wave shifter title track, which takes up the entirety of the second side. Record takes its time opening up but hits moments of can’t-be-wrong majesty in an overt, direct fashion that really intensifies this piece of dark ambiance and a bravery to return to it. Friesen claims it took years to finish this and there is enough feeling and expressiveness across these four offerings that it really shows. Takes a moment to sink in but the builds always pay off. Excellent stuff here.
