Hello new folks from The Greatest Generation tuning in for the first time. I’ve left you with some very challenging music, far from the discussed realms of indie and DIY music for this new year. That’s how it goes at Heathen D. I hope you’ll stick around because there’s a lot of ground to cover that few others will touch. Let me guide you through these strange new worlds. I’ll be the best boss you ever had.

Please dig through the archives for 161 more editions of all this, and discover music that was kept from you. Those reasons don’t exist here.

JANA HORN s/t LP (No Quarter)

Third album from this wondrous Texas singer-songwriter, with a small voice that fills the space with quiet strength, and instrumentation that matches the soft, candlelit cabin galaxy these tracks are born in, vaguely countrified but mostly a representation of the sounds of a region, refined to a stately point where even the brush strokes on a snare are as big as anything else here. Was just thinking about artists who present a whole, solved-out worldview at first who take it as far as they want that to go; if the approach is as sturdy in the quiet of the first inning, might as well keep going in that direction and corner the market. No big shifts here, maybe the element of surprise gone from Optimism, but that’s OK. Jana’s my Cowboy Junkies, understated and careful, and a go-to for times when I need to settle my accounts with the trials of the day.
