Heathen Disco Music Reviews #0053 (December 24, 2024 – Hard Drive Dump Feb. 2024 cont'd)

Reviews of records past by J Mascis, Guitar, Deep Tunnel Project and more

Whoops wrong holiday!

Came to post more reviews of music I found in February. Gonna keep mixing it up until the new release field thickens up, so if you like these, expect more.

Considering a road trip to Detroit on Thursday to see The Gotobeds at Jumbo’s. Say hello if we are indeed both there.

Have a wonderful end of the year!

OS OVERDOSES ALL KILLERS! NO FEELERS! (Echodelick, 2024)

Date: 2/16/2024

Trio out of Queens (or Portugal) strummin’ mental to a drum machine, finding the sleaze beat around the twangy guitar and driving it into the sun. Cramps meet Spacemen 3, maybe. Ends stronger than it starts, a move more bands might want to consider. Very hot.

MUTATED VOID Tarnished (Unlawful Assembly, 2024)

Date: 2/16/2024

Filthy-nasty hardcore out of Memphis. The “Void” in their name is earned – these guys get close to the chaos of their DC forefathers, albeit with shittier production and a weird move into rock/punk (“Abandoned”) placed near the start, and backended by a bunch of minute-plus chaos thrashers. Absolutely sick as fuck.

CUNEIFORM TABS self-titled (Sloth Mate, 2024; r. W.25th /Superior Viaduct, 2024)

Date: 2/16/2024

New transatlantic duo that was once a Bay Area duo, comprising the Violent Change lineup on its second album A Celebration of Taste. Their maturation into haunted pebble beach / frilly cuff ‘60s teen garage weepers in outfits / drug martyr angelic hallucination hymns, if impenetrable as ever, is welcome – you just love to see dudes making music together for this long, and after a break of sorts; they’re not taking it for granted. Insta-reissued by Superior Viaduct and hyped to holy hell for a brief moment through a long, narrow tube.

GUITAR Casting Spells on Turtlehead (Spared Flesh, 2024)

Date: 2/16/2024

Largely a solo affair with friends and contributions from one Saia Kuli out of Portland, OR. Eight songs, pretty short but it gets the job done – finally, someone’s welding the pop sensibilities and inchoate roar of the Swirlies in a modern context. Didn’t give this one enough attention. It’s massive. Love it.

DEEP TUNNEL PROJECT s/t (Comedy Minus One, 2024)

Date: 2/19/2024

Purchased after seeing them for the first time (apparently months ahead of the release date). I’ll be seeing one of their rare performances here in Chicago this coming February, at John Mohr’s 60th birthday show alongside Arcwelder, which is exciting! Initial thoughts here, in the very first newsletter.
